Subject: Quotation about libraries
This has been a slow weekend at the library, and I became intrigued with
the question about the quotation "Libraries will get you through times
of no money better than money will get you through times of no
It turns out that everybody's answers were at least partly right. The
quote was written by Anne Herbert in The Next Whole Earth Catalog (publ.
1980). She had a "newsletter" within the catalog. It was called The
Rising Sun Neighborhood Newsletter and ran in a little box in the bottom
right corner of every odd-numbered page. On page 331 the quoted
statement appears. Although she doesn't say so, she was most likely
altering a quote that appeared in the Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers
comic books in the early '70s. Gilbert Shelton was responsible for this
comic. That quote used the word "dope" instead of "libraries."
Although The Whole Library Handbook 3 says the quote was in the 1969
Whole Earth Catalog, it would seem unlikely. Anne Herbert was born
about 1952, and would have been only 17 at that time.
Hoping for a busier library this evening,
