We have used the SSN as a supplemental ID rather than as the actual ID
for several years. A few patrons have become very irate and refused to
give it, and we didn't push. Fewer still have walked out and never come back.
We gave thought a couple of months ago to discontinuing the practice, but
have changed our minds. We have too many names that are the same. Some
people have 3 or 4 library cards--all with overdues on them and all with
different addresses. The only way we can prove identity is with that SSN.
I am not quite sure why people get so upset about it (it violates their
privacy they say, but you have to give it for drivers licensces, health
insurance, etc., etc., etc.). At any rate, we are going to continuing
using it as part of the patron record.
