Further on the design thread -- DO NOT, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES, ALLOW
YOUR ARCHITECT TO GIVE YOU AN ATRIUM! We have a tile-floored, three
story glass-enclosed lobby with 'balconies' opening from the library
proper into the lobby. Kidlets just LOVE to use this as an echo
chamber! I find myself going to the balcony on the second floor (where
the reference desk is) and admonishing classes that they are in the
library building where screeching is inappropriate behavior.
Also hold out for carpeted floors, which will help deaden noise.
As for open staircases, fire codes may prohibit them. Your architect
should be working with your fire department on this one.
