Subject: Guerilla Librarians
1) A lexicographer ask me if the term "Guerilla Librarian" was in
common usage. She said the term was used in the Nicholson
Baker article in the New Yorker last year, and refers to staff
who would fake circulation activity by back date stamping,
shuffle books from department to department, hide them in
lockers, etc., in order to prevent deaccessioning. Has anyone
heard of this term PRIOR to the NY article and has it achieved
an usage since?
2) Recipe for a successful library dedication:
Start by rounding up the usual suspects, (library board, FOL
president, director and local politicians, clergy for a benediction)
You might invite a child to speak as a community representative - do you
have a teen volunteer or some favorite patron -related to a
library board member or a big donor?
Add food and music - Tom Paxton's song "Let's Go Down to the
Library" is very nice.
At the dedication of our new Central Library in 1995 we wrote a
dedication and closed the ceremony by inviting all present to
recite it together.
Keep it short and simple, tailor it to your community. Enjoy!
